Life Education

We have had two sessions in the Life Education van and our learning focus was "Eating for Health".

We looked into healthy and unhealthy food options. This linked to our inquiry unit of Powerful Plants because we focussed on the nutrition we can get from fruit and vegetables. Lynn discussed these three key questions with us:

  • Why do we need to eat different kinds of foods to stay healthy and give us energy?
  • How do our bodies get energy from the food we eat?
  • Why is physical activity good for our bodies?

We even got to meet Harold!!

How do you tie a shoelace?

In writing, we have been learning how to write a procedural text to give instructions. Last week, we were asked to write instructions on how to tie a shoelace. We worked in a group to try figure out the best way we could explain to someone who didn't know how to do this. The steps needed to be in chronological order and we had to use bossy (imperative) verbs in our instructions.

Auckland Botanic Gardens

Early on in Term 2, the Year 4's went to visit the Auckland Botanic Gardens. We had a fabulous day learning more about our inquiry topic of 'Powerful Plants'.

In our educational session, we got to use a variety of tools to prepare and mulch soil, and plant and water the garden. We prepared seeds for germination, then we got to examine and feed the worms in the worm farm. We were also introduced to the life-cycle of plants and learnt what they need to survive. After this we got to explore the huge variety of plants around the Botanic Gardens.

Check out some of the photos from our trip...

Y4 Trip to MOTAT!

Last week, Room 20 went on a trip to MOTAT. This was to help consolidate our learning from our inquiry topic this term 'Curiosity Can Lead to Innovation'. We have been researching a variety of inventions, and looking at the pros and cons of these. We have learnt that we live in a world of constant change and we have to learn to be open to it, connect with it and sometimes question it.

At MOTAT, we got to see a range of inventions and innovations from New Zealand and around the world, and how much things have change over time. Have a look at some photos from our trip...
